Exodus 20:3

CIT - God commanded Israel to worship no other gods but Himself. Proposition - God's people are to worship God and God alone. Question - How can you and I allow no other gods in our lives?

INTRODUCTON: What happens when we break this first commandment? There is a story in the OT about violating this command. In the OT we find the story of a great King and his downfall. He was one of the greatest Kings of the earth. He was wealthy, wise, honored and successful in all he did. He crushed his enemies. His palace was filled with gold and precious jewels. His name was Solomon, King of Israel. He was given wisdom by God surpassing any other. He wrote the Song of Solomon as a young man, Proverbs in his middle years, and Ecclesiastes an old man. Yet, he failed when it came to this commandment. The Bible tells us that his many wives, 700 of them, and his concubines, 300 more, turned his heart away from God. He worshipped the Ashtoreth and Molech. In I Kings 11 God said that because he broken His commandments and followed after false gods, the kingdom would be torn from him. How could he be so wise and so stupid at the same time?

Before we grow too self-righteous and think we are better than Solomon we need to study this first commandment. There is a warning here for all of us. j
