CIT - God commands the people of Israel to keep the Sabbath day Holy.
Proposition - God's people should keep the Lord's day holy.
INTRODUCTION:
ILLUS: Have you ever eaten a chocolate sundae? Do you know where the name Sundae came from? Around 1875, the city fathers of Evanston, Illinois passed a law forbidding the sale of ice cream sodas on Sundays. Someone came up with the ideal of selling ice cream with syrup instead of soda water. This Sunday delicacy became so popular, so that people began asking for Sundays. City officials objected to naming the dish after the holy day, so they changed the spelling. Sundae it has been ever since.
It seems foreign to us that ice cream sodas were outlawed on a Sundays. The whole idea of Sabbath keeping, and the sacredness of the Lord's day has fallen into disuse in 21st century America.
What does it mean to remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy? What so special about Sunday? What difference can one day make after all?
To answer these questions we will first take a look at what the Bible teaches about the Sabbath in the OT, then the Lord's Day in the New. Finally, we study just what his passage means to you and I. In other word, how can we follow this command.
I think we will find that one day, the right day, God's day; when it is kept sacred, can make a huge difference in our lives.
THE EXPLANATION OF THE SABBATH DAY -
To understand this command we need to take a moment to understand the OT teaching on the Sabbath.
First - Sabbath means rest. To remember in this passage means to set apart, or to keep it separate.
Each seventh day belonged to the Lord, and would not be a day of work, but a day set apart for rest and devoted to the worship of Yahweh.
THE PATTERN IN GOD'S CREATION - The historical precedent for the Sabbath was the creation week.
