Looks Can Be Deceiving - Jesus' Judgement on Dead Religion
Colin Wimberly
Mark 11:12-19
CIT: Jesus judges Israel.
PROPOSITION: Jesus judges the dead religion of Israel.
INTRODUCTION:
Looks can be deceiving.
Remember the apple in Snow White? It looked perfect, but in reality it was deadly.
Or If you are a Harry Potter Fan remember (as in apple) Hagrid? Outwardly big and scary, but really a great guy on the inside.
Looks can be deceiving when it comes to religion also.
Read the text.
A fig tree and the Temple. What do they have to do with each other? They both have a common meaning. Jesus wraps these two incidents together because they are meant to be understood and interpreted together. Both appeared to be something they were not.
This morning I think it would be good for us to examine our own hearts. We can appear to be something we are not. We can give the outward appearance of life and religion, but on the inside be dead and far from God.
We can fool others. We can even fool ourselves. But we can never fool Jesus.
This morning we will find the characteristics and the consequences of dead religion
1. THEY HAD A FALSE APPEARANCE OF HEALTH-VS.12-14

The cursing of the fig-tree is a prophetic act (Elijah and Jeremiah performed them also). An action with a deeper, spiritual meaning. The fig tree represents Israel and the Jewish religion. It also speaks to you and I this morning.
What does this prophetic act mean?
- THEY HAD AN APPEARANCE OF RELIGION-''a fig tree in leaf''. The time of the year was Passover. In Palestine fig trees produced crops of small edible buds in March followed by the appearance of large green leaves. This early green fruit was common food for peasants. This full green foliage promised figs. The tree gave an appearance of bearing fruit.
