Eternal Significance
Colin Wimberly
Mark 14:3-9
CIT - Mary expresses her love and devotion to Jesus Christ.
Proposition - The most eternally significant act any of us can perform is to simply love Jesus.
INTRODUCTON:
What are you doing that has eternal significance? You may think that you really can't do anything what will last eternally. After all, you and I, we are just ordinary people, with ordinary abilities.
What if I were to tell you that ordinary people can accomplish something of eternal significance?
This morning we are going to meet just such a person.
This passage is found in 3 of the 4 gospels. In fact, in vs. 7 of this passage Jesus decreed that the story of what this woman has done will be spoken of everywhere the Gospel is preached!
Here is the outline this morning. This was the act of an ordinary woman, that was ridiculed by others, but was honored by Jesus, because it was an extravagant, overflowing act of devotion.
I want to challenge everyone of you to do the same. Not the same act, but have the same love and devotion to Christ that will give your life eternal significance.
1. THIS WAS THE ACT OF AN ORDINARY WOMAN -
Describe her action - A flask of expensive perfrume, broken over Jesus' head. In this day it was not uncommon for an honored guest to be anointed in this manner. But something is very different about his instance.
This is Mary, known only as the sister of Martha and Lazarus. She seems to have been part of the inner circle of Jesus' associates. She is not wealthy, not gifted with great abilities. In fact, she seems to have spent much of her life overshowed by her siblings.
Jesus says of here - ''She has done what she could.'' Literally, she has done all that she can. ILLUS: The banty egg. This was the greatest act of her life.
The danger is not in doing what we cannot, but in not doing what we can!
- Rodgers - Ordinary people make the best disciples!
Apply: Think about the disciples. ...
