Philippi would never be the same.

This passage of Scripture details, not just the experience so Paul and Silas, but the power of Jesus at work in Philippi. This same power is available for us today. Chapter 16 is a picture of what life in the church can and should be.


1. DELIVERANCE FOR THOSE IN BONDAGE- VS. 16-18
They were going to a place of prayer - this is a common theme to these men.
A slave girl with a spirit of divination - In the Greek Text this reads ''A spirit of Pythona. This referred to the snake that guarded the famous oracle at Delphi. Eventually, the python was killed by Apollo, the god of prophecy. It was widely believed that Apollo spoke through the Oracle, so one with the Spirit of Pythona referred to anyone in contact with Apollos.
In reality this young girl was enslaved not just physically, but spiritually. She was possessed by a demon who spoke through her.

She brought her owners great profit - Greeks and Romans put great stock in such fortune telling. No commander would set out on a major military campaign nor would an emperor make an important decree without first consulting an oracle to see how things might turn out.
This girl was a gold mine to her owners.

She began to follow Paul around the town crying out ''These men are servants of the most high God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation. ''
