Genesis 4:2
I. Introduction
When I was about 12 or 13 years old, my family was living in Ohio. We actually had a house with this huge backyard and my dad talking about maybe building a little fishpond on the property. Now, I don't know if my dad was actually serious about it, but he seemed serious about it, and here's something you need to know about me: I tend to get frustrated when we keep talking about something without actually doing something about it. So at a certain point, I got tired of talking about building a fishpond and I wanted to start doing something about it.
Now, one of the questions we had was, will the soil on our property actually hold water? I mean, there's no point in building a pond if the water's just going to leak out, right? So that was the question we kept asking...and again, I got frustrated that we just kept wondering about this question and decided ''hey, that's something we can actually do. We can see if the ground will hold water.'' Now I knew I shouldn't dig a trial pond, so I hit upon a super simple plan: where the edge of our yard hit our neighbor's driveway, there was a pretty good size drainage pipe that would allow water from our yard to go under our neighbor's driveway. So I blocked it up. I got a vinyl cushion and I just stuck it on the end of the pipe. My thought was the next time it rained, water would pool here and we'd just see if it stayed. If it stayed, then the ground could hold water and if not, well, at least we'd know. It felt good. The plan was moving.
Two things I had not accounted for. First, was the amount of land that actually drained water into this area. Second was how much rain Ohio gets.
And to be honest, I kind of forgot about what I'd done, so when it started to rain, I didn't think to go check on my experiment, which meant that multiple days of rain had passed before I looked in the back. I don't remember how many. ...
