James 5:7-12
Life in a fallen world is hard. Bad things happen. Tragedies happen. Sickness and death are unavoidable. And at times persecution for the believer can be a part of life. In fact, rather than not suffering because you are God’s child, you pick up a new reason to suffer!
Last week we saw that some of the rich land owners were stealing from and treating the poor horribly. This also mentioned in chapter 2 when the church is told the rich drag them into the courts. – James is written in this context of suffering and vulnerability. – We know the early church suffered much injustice and wrong treatment.
We saw in James 1 that as believers we are called to be STEADFAST when we encounter trials. God uses those trials to prove and strengthen our faith. – Today we are going to see that we need to be PATIENT IN SUFFERING.
ILLUS. – STOCK MARKET – If you have a retirement fund, or invest in any way... you know a key to investing well is patient endurance. Things go down... but in time, they tend to go up. No guarantee... but you generally have to wait things out... be in it for the long haul.
Similarly, in the Christian life.. we have to hang in there when thing get bad... we are to patiently wait in this life...for the Lord to come. They key to suffering well, is suffering with patient endurance.
7 Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord. See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains. 8 You also, be patient. Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand. 9 Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door. 10 As an example of suffering and patience, brothers, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 Behold, we consider those blessed who remained steadfas ...
