I. Introduction

Welcome to Mission Hills. It's an honor to have you with us today. We are three weeks deep into our Living Proof series where we're looking at seven stories that a follower of Jesus named John wrote about seven miracles Jesus performed...or, as John calls them, seven signs, because each of these miracles, in a unique way, points to who Jesus is, not just as the Son of God, but each of these miracles, these signs, shows us who Jesus is as a person, they show us a lot about what's most important to him.

And that's important to us, because here at Mission Hills, we're all about helping people become like Jesus and join him on mission...and that's not just a matter of what we do, it's a matter of what we care about. It's a matter of what matters to us. And one of my most passionate prayers for myself and for this church is that what matters most to Jesus will be what matters most to us.

And today we're going to look at a miracle, a sign, that Jesus performed, that gives us some very challenging insight into what matters to Jesus.

And what this story points to is something that I wrestle with personally. Let me be a little vulnerable with you. 2019 was a hard year for me. God did some amazing things and that was awesome, but there were some things that took up a lot of my time and energy as a leader last year that were really hard. In particular, I had to make the decision and then implement the decision to let two of our staff go. Now, I didn't make those decisions alone. I had the wisdom and the input and the support of the elders and my executive team...so it wasn't just me, I feel the weight of those decisions very personally. And, to be honest, I'm still wrestling with them. On a pretty regular basis, I find myself revisiting those decisions and wrestling with whether or not we handled them right.
