A young mother was explaining to her five-year-old what would take place at her friend's surprise party, why they were hiding, what they were going to do when she walked in and all the food and fun they were going to have. ''It's going to be a big surprise'' and then she whispered, ''And, they'll be so shocked when they open their present!'' ''Why?'' he whispered back. ''Is it something electric?''

That would be a shock! In a world where truth is often stranger than fiction there are things that still surprise and shock us. I find true of the Bible too. No matter how well you think you know a story, how familiar you are with a story, there are always elements of it that you miss until one day it hits you, something unexpected, something that shocks you.

For me, one of those shocking, hard to believe, haven't seen that moments occurs in 2 Samuel 1. It is a chapter filled with surprising events and reactions. What grabbed my attention in this story was an unexpected grief, not death or loss but grief.

So, all this makes sense, I am going to do what some TV shows, especially dramas, do and that is set the stage for the current episode by providing a flashback to the previous show or one that occurred earlier in the season.

I'm going to give you a quick bullet-point flashback/recap. If you want the full episode then you need to go back and read, 1 Samuel 27-31.
David fled to Philistine territory to escape Saul. He ingratiated himself, on false pretenses, to the King of Gath who gave David a city named Ziklag.
