I debated on whether or not to skip over this chapter and the story of Mephibosheth because it is one that I have preached several times over the years and have preached on different occasions here as well.

I could not bring myself to leave this chapter out of this series…

It is one of my favorite stories in all of Scripture. It’s hard to skip one of your favorite stories when its right in front of you. It’s like trying to pass by a plate full of chocolate chip cookies without grabbing 10 or 20! You know what they taste like, but you still want one! (John Jasper, an ex-slave who got saved, learned to read so he could read his bible, pastored and preached after the civil war in Richmond, Va. He had a famous sermon on heaven that he preached often. When asked why he said, “I like to hear it. I like to preach it”).

If we are doing a series on the life of David it stands to reason that we would include what is a highpoint in David’s life, as high as the killing of the giant Goliath.

The Bible says that David was a man after God’s own heart and in David’s life story there is no other place where God’s heart is more clearly seen than right here in 2 Samuel 9.

It is one of the most moving and vivid portrayals of grace. (Titled this message, “Grace Comes Knocking).

To say that David’s life would have made a good Soap-Opera would be an understatement. It has all the twists, turns, action-excitement and emotions of an award winning, binge worthy, primetime drama.

For all the excitement and drama that has characterized most of David’s life, we find him and the nation in a moment of rest. The heart-racing action and suspense has stopped. No battles. No wars. No political intrigue. Peace.
The kingdom has advanced. Enemies subdued.
The kingdom has prospered. The king is loved and respected.
