Yeah, that's a good question. Why was Joseph in jail? Last weekend, we saw Joseph's self-obsession led to conflict with his brothers who ended up selling him into slavery in Egypt and convincing their dad that a wild animal had killed him. You know, standard sibling rivalry stuff. So we know why he's in Egypt...but why is he jail? That kind of comes out of nowhere...or at least it does in the kid's version of his story. And the reason for that's pretty simple: the thing that landed him in jail wasn't exactly the kind of thing you put into kid's bedtime stories. But I think we can handle it in a tasteful that won't cause too many awkward conversations for all the parents with small children.

Why don't you go ahead and grab a bible and start making your way to Genesis 39 and let's rejoin the story of the life of Joseph.

While you're making your way there, let me say this: I was pretty hard on Joseph last week...because I believe the way God told us the story of his early years in chapter 37 was specifically intended to make us recognize his self-obsession and the division and havoc it caused. But here in Genesis 39 - and by the way, we're going from ch. 37 to 39 because ch 38 isn't about Joseph...it's a story about one of his brothers and it could totally be part of this Explict series, because it's a doozy. In fact, it was one of the stories I was going to do as part of this series but once the pandemic hit and I realized that we were going to have a lot of small children listening, I changed course a little and decided not to do that one. There's no way to make to tell the story in a way that's appropriate for an audience that has a lot of small children in it.
