Judges 12:3-30

I. Introduction

Fourth stuff...with we associate the 4th with independence and we celebrate strength and downplay weakness...maybe mention racism and things like that that we sweep under the carpet.

II. Main Body

12 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD, and because they did this evil the LORD gave Eglon king of Moab power over Israel. (Judges 3:12)

Now, in this story, we're not told exactly what the evil was that they did, but notice that it says ''again'' they did evil...which strongly suggests that the evil was a repeat offence. They had done it before and now they're doing it again. And if we go back a little earlier in the book of Judges 2:11, we probably get some insight into what this evil was: 11 Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the LORD and served the Baals. 12 They forsook the LORD, the God of their ancestors, who had brought them out of Egypt. They followed and worshiped various gods of the peoples around them. (Jdg. 2:11-12 NIV)

So this repeated evil had two parts: they stopped following the Lord and they started following the false gods of the people around them. Now, this is some really deep theology right here, so try to stick with me...it's going to be complex: God is the source of all blessing and protection...so when you follow God, you get to experience his blessing and his protection. But if you peel off from following God and start following something else, you leave behind God's blessing and his protection. When we stop following God, we stop experiencing His blessing and protection. Now, that doesn't mean that following God always means we live on easy street. Jesus himself said that following him would bring us trouble in this life, but there's a huge difference between experiencing trouble with God's blessing and protection and experiencing it without his blessing and protection...which is guaranteed if we don't follow him.
