God enjoys using the ordinary to teach extraordinary lessons. He specializes in taking the simple and making it look spectacular. For example, he parted the sea with a rod, killed a giant with a stone, and chose twelve unlikely men to transform the world.
This is how Luke records their calling:
6:12 Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. 13 When morning came, he called his disciples to him, choosing twelve to also be apostles.
In his book ''Living Proof,'' Jim Peterson tells about taking his family to Brazil on a cruise. He was one of sixty missionaries on a boat with one-hundred and twenty passengers. That's a one-to-one for sixteen days with a boat filled with heathens!
Peterson did his best to relate to the other passengers. He indulged himself in unhurried conversations, he shared his faith when given the chance, but then he began to worry that all the other missionaries were doing the same thing.
So, Peterson called for an emergency meeting! He asked what all the other missionaries were doing. To his surprise, he discovered they had done nothing! Peterson writes, ''If we can't evangelize sixty passengers in sixteen days, we might as well go home.''
I heard about a seminary student who was asked to preach in chapel. He was nervous, for sure! When the day came he stood up and asked, ''Do you know what I'm gonna say?'' All of his peers shook their heads no. ''Neither do I,'' he replied. ''Chapel dismissed.''
His professor told him afterwards that he was preaching the next day. So, the next day he stood up and asked, ''Does anyone know what I'm gonna say?'' His peers replied by shaking their heads yes this time. So he replied, ''Then it doesn't need repeating. Chapel dismissed.
