James 2:1-13

Intro/Attention

We're studying the book of James on Sunday mornings in a series I'm calling, When Faith Works, and we've made it to chapter 2. Take your Bible and turn to James 2:1-13. So far, we have learned how important it is to respond appropriately to trials, temptation, and the truth of God's Word. James tells us in 1:22, ''But be doers of the word, and not hearer only, deceiving yourselves.'' (ON SCREEN) This really sums up the book of James. How can we live what we say we believe? How does genuine faith lead to godly behavior?

The good news is that James doesn't just give us principles without practical application. As he concludes chapter 1 and transitions to chapter 2, he gets very practical. He talks about what ''religion that is pure and undefiled'' at the end of chapter 1 and then transitions to how the church should treat people without ''partiality'' in chapter 2. Today, from James 2:1-13, I'm preaching on the subject, Playing Favorites. READ TEXT

*We all have favorites, don't we? Maybe you had a favorite subject in high school or college. Do you have a favorite team that you pull for? A team that you would LOVE to see play again soon after the pandemic has subsided. What about favorite memories with your family or friends? Do you have a favorite shirt you just love? I do. But there's something funny about my favorite shirt; I don't wear it much because I don't want to wear it out. But I want to wear it because it's my favorite shirt. Strange, I know. Do you have a favorite child? Of course you do! No matter how many children you have, you know exactly which one is your favorite. I'll tell you right now, Stephanie and I have a favorite child. Do you want to know who it is? Just kidding! We don't have a favorite child. BUT, I'm watching this sermon right now in the living room with my kids and I just wanted to see their reactions!*
