Introduction

Whenever there is a major tragedy, whether a school shooting, a suicide, or even a global pandemic we all soon quickly thereafter find ourselves asking, 'How did we miss the warning signs?' Some of the tenor at times devolves into Monday-morning quarterbacking, as we've certainly seen with the novel COVID-19 pandemic. We've watched political parties and media outlets alike seemingly use this virus and its death-toll as an indictment against their enemies, shamelessly blaming everyone else for the failure to see this thing coming.

In most cases, however, the sentiment behind the question 'How did we miss the warning signs?' is more genuine and sorrowful. We look back after something terrible has happened and wonder, 'How could I have maybe stopped it or done something about it?' Sometimes there really was nothing we could've done and we simply have to admit our finitude and helplessness as human creatures. Other times, however, there were genuine warning signs we should've taken more seriously.

You see, sometimes we miss the signs altogether. Maybe we're so involved and emotionally tied up in the scenario that we're just blind to what's right in front us. Maybe we're so distracted by other things that we're just negligent. Other times, however, we see the signs but we just do nothing about them. Maybe deep down inside we know something is up but we just don't want to believe it so we convince ourselves all is well. Maybe we don't treat the situation as seriously as we should. We take some minor steps but nothing significant or we just don't think it's that big of a deal and move on altogether. But then the tragedy strikes and we're left with this sickening feeling that we should've done something; we should've taken it more seriously while we had the chance.
