Galatians 5:19-23 - ''Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, (20) Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, (21) Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God. (22) But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, (23) Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.''
We have a generation that talks a great deal about love -- but this generation probably knows the least about what it really means to love and be loved.
Many people think love is an emotion. Oceans of emotions -- it is just feeling. But that's not what love is. Love is not feeling. It many contain feeling -- it may result in feeling -- but love is not primarily feeling nor is it an emotion. I'll tell you why.
The Bible commands us to love. And you cannot command a feeling. It may contain an emotion and may result in an emotion -- but the kind of love I'm talking about is not an emotion.
Love is not an uncontrollable passion. People have the idea that love is something that happens to us and we are victims or recipients of it. We fall in love or fall out of love -- it sort of happens.
The song says, ''Please release me let me go -- I don't love you any more.''
The Bible says, ''Husbands love your wives.'' This is not a request -- but a command. Love involves choice and conduct. You can choose to love and when you choose to love -- it is not so much how you feel -- but what you do.
We use one word for love -- the Greek's had three words for love.
Eros -- erotic -- the kind a boy has for a girl and vice versa. Romantic love.
