The Word of the Lord
If you were with us last week, we started what will be a long sermon series for us. We are going to chip away at the Gospel of John among other studies that we are going to be doing. So right now, we are spending 3 weeks on the just John chapter 1, and we are going to cover John 2 and 3 later in the year.
Last week, of course, we started the chapter with this big introduction. This week the text is a little more pointed but no less consequential.
It is centered on John the Baptist. Now John is an interesting guy who was very famous in his time, but I also think he's a guy that we haven't really understood, and I think this passage helps us understand three things about John:
- Who He Was
- What He Said
- What He Did
So, who was John?
Well, in some ways the story of Jesus begins with John the Baptist. In the Gospel of Luke before we read about the coming of Jesus, we have this announcement of the coming of John. John was likely the third cousin of Jesus. John's mother and Jesus' mother Mary were likely first cousins. Their mothers were likely sisters. There were all of these miraculous things surrounding both the announcement of John and the birth of John. The Bible says that John was filled with the Holy Spirit from his mother's womb.
Where we meet John in this passage is out in the wilderness where he's calling people to repentance, and he did this throughout baptism. Now the idea of baptism at this time was understood as spiritual cleansing, as a washing.
