Big Idea: God loves turning our messes into His miracles.

I. Introduction - A quick lesson on how to think correctly about Scripture

We're going to do something a little weird today. We're going to be looking today at a passage that, if I had to guess, probably hasn't featured prominently in your previous Christmas celebrations. In fact, it's probably a passage that you haven't spent much time looking at period. In fact...if we're totally honest with each other...it's quite possibly a passage that you've skipped over entirely.

Let me ask you a question: how many of you have ever set yourself a goal of reading all the way through the whole Bible, maybe at the beginning of the year? And how many of you have ever had this experience: day 1...Genesis 1, day 2...Genesis 2, day 3...Genesis 3, day 4...wow, that's a long chapter...you know, I don't' want to burn out, so maybe I'll break this chapter up over a couple of days, and suddenly, day 20, chapter 5. Ok, let's see...now when Adam lived 130 years, he had Seth and when Seth liveed 105 years he had Enosh and...whoa! That's a genaeology! Sweet! Chapter 6!

But here's the thing: genealogies are not what we typically assume them to be. We assume that they're what I would call ''simple history,'' meaning a simple list of historical facts. But they're not. In fact, there is no part of God's Word that is ''simple history.'' God's Word certainly contains a lot of historical facts, but the Bible never gives us fact ...
