Matthew 4:19
I. Introduction
Welcome to our new mini-series, Clean Slate. The goal of this series is to unpack what God's Word has to say about making room for what God wants to do through us this year. There are two important beliefs that come together in this series:
1. God wants us to participate with Him in his work of transforming lives. In other words, mission is mandatory. And that's true not just for the church but for every follower of Jesus.
What was one of the very first things Jesus said to his disciples? Follow Me and I will make you fishers of men. (Matthew 4:19). That's mission.
What was one of the very last things Jesus said to his disciples? Therefore go and make disciples of all nations... (Matthew 28:19) That's mission.
You cannot truly follow Jesus without embracing His mission.
2. The second belief is this: we have all accumulated stuff that, if we're not careful, will keep us from letting God write his full story on our lives. Take a look at the different words written on these slates. Chances are you'll immediately recognize one or two that take up a lot of space in your life. What we're going to do in this series is see what it looks like to move past this stuff. And one of the things I'm going to suggest is that Joining God in his transforming work does not require a clean slate, it accomplishes it. What I mean is that we don't have to deal with all of this crud before God can use us. We just have to push it aside enough to begin to see what God is calling us to and as we answer that call, the Holy Spirit does his work on this stuff.
And so the question we need to be asking ourselves here at the beginning of 2017 is this: what does God want to do through me in this new year?''
I believe with all of my heart that there is an answer to that question. And that the answer is specific to you. Of course God has a general will for all of us in 2017 - th ...
