John 8:12
I. Introduction
Welcome to Mission Hills. So glad to have you with us here on the first full weekend of December and the beginning of our Christmas series, All is Bright.
Here at Mission Hills we believe - actually, we know - that Christianity is a world-changing faith. Saying yes to Jesus not only changes us, individually, but it changes everything. Our relationship with God through faith in Jesus changes relationships with other people. It changes our families, it changes our communities, it changes the world. Or at least it should...and that's what this series is all about.
Let me share two truths that are going to guide us through this series. The first is something that Jesus said about himself:
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, ''I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.'' (John 8:12)
The second is something Jesus said about his followers:
14 ''You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house.
In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. (Mat 5:14-16)
See, we are commanded to shine, to let His light in us shine out from us, driving back the darkness and making everything bright.
Now, the bad news is that we have an Enemy that is committed to keeping us from shining. The good news is that He who is in you is greater than he who is the world (1Jo 4:4). And our enemy knows that. He knows that darkness can never defeat light. So his primary tactic is to speak lies to us designed to keep us from shining. Because if we refuse to shine...if we keep our light hidden under a bowl...then we'll never see how weak darkness actually is.
