Overcoming Temptation (2 of 11)
Series: James: A Faith that Works

James 1:13-18

Temptation. We all face it. None of us are immune to it. We may all have different ways we are tempted, but we are tempted nonetheless. How do we handle it? How do we overcome it?

You may recall last week we looked at being steadfast under trial.

James 1:12- Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.

One of the dangers we face when under trial is the threat of temptation, that could lead us to sin. In fact, the passage we are looking at today, the same Gk word is used for trial and temptation. To remain steadfast under trial, we must overcome temptations that arise.

James 1:13-18- 13 Let no one say when he is tempted, ''I am being tempted by God,'' for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. 14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. 15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

James has transitioned. In the Greek it's the same word for trial and temptation, but the usage is different. He now gives it an evil connotation. He has told us God tests our faith, wants us to choose joy and grow through our trials, but temptation is different. God doesn't tempt.

James deals with these topics together because they are CONNECTED. You tend to experience temptation when in a trial.

People go through difficult seasons and they may... over drink, escape to an affair, do unethical things at work. ...
