Romans 1:1-7
Happy Sunday morning to you Waypoint St. Charles and Waypoint Iola, and those of you who are watching in other parts of the state, country, and the world. So glad you are with us today. Well, I am both excited and nervous this morning because we start a journey that as a pastor of over 25 years I've never been on. What journey is that? Well, today, we start a new sermon series preaching through the book of Romans.
I was talking to a pastor friend of mine on the phone the other day and I told him I was going to begin preaching through Romans, and he said, 'Whoa, do you think ready for that?' Haha! That was a real confidence booster! The honest answer is 'no', I don't feel ready to tackle this wonderfully amazing, yet theologically challenging book. But I feel some relief when I read what Peter wrote about Paul's writing in
2 Peter 3:16: ''His (Paul's) letters contain some things that are hard to understand...''. Can I get an amen? There are several parts of Romans that will no doubt present some head-scratching moments for us, but we will navigate through those with as much of God's grace and wisdom as we possibly can.
Some of you are probably wondering how long we will be in Romans. Well, it took Martyn Lloyd-Jones, the great British pastor of the mid-1900's, 366 sermons to preach through the entire book of Romans. A modern-day preacher many of you know and love, John Piper, started preaching through Romans in 1998 and finished in 2006. That's called the 'Hotel California' approach to preaching through a book of the bible 'where you check in, but you can never leave'. I prefer a little bit quicker pace than that, but we will be in Romans for the next year or so with some breaks built in along the way.
