When our son, Justin, was just two years old, he became extremely ill. After three days sick at home, we took him to the doctor and were immediately sent by ambulance from Olympia, WA, to Children's Hospital in Seattle. It turns out he had somehow contracted E. coli. We were informed by the doctors that he would experience kidney failure, he would need dialysis, and he would likely die. We were also informed that the mortality rate for children two and younger was 95%. In moments like these, when you face times of trouble, where do you turn?

We're in the midst of a crisis with COVID-19. Many of us have been experiencing fear at the possibility of contracting COVID, of being hospitalized, and perhaps even dying. Some of us are fearful about elderly family members or loved ones with compromised immune systems. But even if we aren't afraid of the Coronavirus for health reasons, many of us are certainly worried for financial reasons. In the near future, some of us will lose our jobs or have our hours cut. Some of us have already lost our jobs. Many of us are watching our retirement accounts plummet. To one degree or another, we're experiencing some degree of anxiety. To make matters worse, we can't even go to church because gathering together would put too many lives at risk. Yet, we long to worship together and to experience community.

The pressing questions we're all facing are these: How are we going to hold up under these tremendous burdens and uncertainties? Are we going to let a flood of fear and anxiety overwhelm us? Will we find our refuge in the Lord amidst this distress? What does it mean that the Lord is our strength and refuge? Is God going to spare us? Our loved ones? Or, is God going to strengthen and sustain us through all that's happening and what will come? What does this even look like?
