Take your bibles and turn with me tonight to Daniel, chapter 8, this wonderful Old Testament book of Daniel. We are continuing tonight in our verse by verse, chapter by chapter, expositional study of this amazing and really applicable Old Testament prophetic book.
Now, I just used a whole bunch of big words right there. And sometimes you take for granted that everybody understands everything you're saying. And so there are a lot of guys today that throw around the term expository or expositional preaching. And you may wonder what in the world does that mean? It sounds like some other words, but they're not those words. So let me give you what Danny Akin says. Actually, he was my chair for my doctorate degree at Southeastern Seminary. This is his definition of expository preaching. He said, ''By expository preaching, I mean text-driven preaching that honors the truth of scripture as it was given by the Holy Spirit discovering that God inspired meaning through historical, grammatical, theological investigation and interpretation. The preacher by means of engaging and compelling proclamation explains illustration that applies the meaning of the biblical text in submission to it in the power of the Holy Spirit preaching Christ for a verdict of changed lives.'' And that didn't help you one bit.
David Island, my chair now, gives this title for text-driven preaching; it's very similar. He said, ''Text-driven preaching is preaching that develops the substance structure and spirit of the text.'' You say, ''Well, I still don't understand what you're talking about.''
