The 3 Men of 3rd John in 3D
Dr. Ernest L. Easley
3 John
If I were to ask you Bible trivia buffs to name the shortest verse in the Bible, most would say John 11.35, ''Jesus wept'' and you would be ... WRONG! The correct answer is 1 Thessalonians 5.17, ''rejoice always.''
You say, ''Well, it appears we have a tie for the shortest verse because both verses consist of two words.'' Not exactly. We have a clear winner when you read these two verses in the Greek New Testament. The John 11.35 passage consists of three words: ''The Jesus wept'' whereas the 1 Thessalonians 5.17 passage only consists of two words: ''Always rejoice'' making 1 Thessalonians the shortest verse in the Bible: ''rejoice always.''
If 1 Thessalonians 5.17 is the shortest verse in the Bible, what would you say is the shortest book in the Bible? Somebody says, ''Well, it appears to be the book of 2nd John with it's 13 verses'' and you would be ..... WRONG! The correct answer is 3rd John with its 15 verses.
You say, ''Now wait just a minute! How could 3rd John with its 15 verses be shorter than 2nd John with its 13 verses?'' Well, because 2nd John has 245 Greek words in those 13 verses and 3rd John only has 219 Greek words in it's 15 verses making 3rd John the shortest book in the New Testament!
And it's that shortest book in the New Testament we find ourselves in this morning as we come to the fourth of the five one-chapter books in the Bible. First there was Philemon and Obadiah, 2nd John and now 3nd John and then next week we will wrap up this study with the book of Jude.
So take God's word and turn with me to the book of 3 John as we think together for a few minutes today on this subject:
The 3 Men of 3rd John in 3D!
You say, ''Ernest, now the ''3 Men'' tells me that John address 3 men in this little book and the ''3rd John,'' well, that's the book the 3 men are found in; but what's the ''3D?''
