Per Mrs. Flowers request I want to speak to you briefly from Isaiah 40.

The context of this passage is the Babylonian Exile. Chapter 40 is the turning point in the book of Isaiah when God begins to offer hope to the captive and to remind them that his work in their lives is by no means complete. It begins with a question.

Isaiah 40:27-31 (ESV)
27 Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, ''My way is hidden from the Lord, and my right is disregarded by my God''?

Those are two sentiments that we have all felt at one time or another. Like God is distant from us. Like He doesn't know what we are going through.

There are three things about God that give good people problems. God's Power and God's Goodness and God's Observation.

You see, we assume if God knows what we are going through He would obviously remedy our situation. So we begin to wonder -
1. Perhaps God isn't strong enough... perhaps he looks at our situation and has compassion, but simply can't do anything about it.
2. Perhaps God isn't good enough... perhaps he sees our situation and can fix it, but maybe he just doesn't want to.

But generally we know better than those two thing. God is good and God is all powerful. So we are left to the category chosen by the people of Israel in this passage.

3. Perhaps God just doesn't know how much this hurts. May God is up there in Heaven and it's so far away... maybe if He only knew what this was doing to me, to our family, He would have compassion and remedy our situation.

But friends, I would echo to you what Isaiah said, ''Why do you say these things''. You see, I can't relate exactly to what you are going through. But God can. You see God also had a Son, his Son left the home of Heaven to Sojourn down on this rebellious planet, and it ultimately cost Him his life. The Son died distant from the Father, forsaken and alone.
