Knowledge is a wonderful thing, don't you think? It's always better to know than not to know and this is true about any subject we can imagine. To be left in the dark is never to our advantage. How about God? The wonderful thing about God is that He wants us to know Him, to have a personal relationship with Him. That's why He saves us! The terrible thing, however, is that so few today really care about getting to know God.

David's invitation in Psalm 34 is for His readers to come and get to know God, not just know about Him. Most everyone, it seems knows something about God, or thinks they do. Some of us only know about a god of our own making; a god that suits us. It will always be to our advantage to know the God who knows us.

11 Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord. 12 Who is the man who desires life, And loves many days, that he may see good? 13 Keep your tongue from evil, And your lips from speaking deceit. 14 Depart from evil and do good; Seek peace and pursue it. 15 The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, And His ears are open to their cry. 16 The face of the Lord is against those who do evil, To cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.

TO KNOW GOD IS TO FEAR HIM

11 Come, you children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the Lord.

This is not the same thing as being afraid of God. The idea of the Psalmist is to stand in awe of God. There seems to be precious little of that in today's 21st. century world. One can hear God's name being taken in vain on numerous occasions during the day. We get so jaded to that kind of thing, so used to it, that before long we're doing it ourselves.
