One of the most familiar stories in the Bible involves David and Goliath and the confrontation between the armies of Israel and the Philistines. The Philistines stood on one mountain and the Israelites on the other with the valley of Elah in between.

The champion of the armies of the Philistines stepped out and made a challenge. He offered to fight against any one of the Israelites and the loser would become the servants of the winner. He was quite a man. His name was Goliath and he stood 9 feet tall. Needless to say, there were no volunteers from the Israelite camp. Look at verse 11.

Enters one shepherd boy, David. He was delivering supplies from home to his three older brothers. He heard the jeers of the Giant across the valley and he became appalled at the cowardice of the armies of the living God and the Giant's ridicule of God's people.

Of course, we are familiar with the rest of the story. David, with his sling, slew the giant and won a great victory for God! By the way, this story is the first reference to the term Rock-and-Roll. David hit the giant in the head with a rock and then he cut it off and it rolled down into the valley. 

Here we see a tremendous truth unfolding. Even though Saul was still on the throne, David had just been anointed future king over Israel (I Samuel 16). Immediately he was confronted with a giant of a problem. In almost every book of the Bible this truth is revealed.

Book of Joshua, immediately after entering the Promise Land, the Israelites were confronted with the walls of Jericho.

In I Kings, on the heels of the resounding victory on Mt. Carmel, Elijah was confronted with King Ahab.

In Nehemiah, as soon as they began to rebuild the broken walls, they were opposed by their enemies.

In the life of David, right after being anointed king by Samuel, he was confronted with the giant, Goliath.
