Galatians 5:13-15

Message Truth: The real test of mature Christianity is not how much liberty we may exercise, but how much love we exhibit.
Gal. 5:13 For you were called to freedom, brethren; only {do} not {turn} your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. 14 For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the {statement} , "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF." 15 But if you bite and devour one another, take care lest you be consumed by one another.
Introduction: Gal. 5:13 For you were called to freedom, brethren; These opening words declare that all of us who have accepted Christ by faith are free. We are free to serve Christ and become like Him. But are we also free to disobey God and become self-centered? No! This would suppose that evil can be good, and that wrong can be right. Nothing could be farther from Biblical truth.
CAUTIONS REGARDING CHRISTIAN LIBERTY
• We must guard against two extremes.
1. Uncontrolled expressions of liberty.
2. Unbending demands of legalism.
• We must seek to maintain balance in life.
1. Love for others.
2. Self-control.
UNDERSTANDING OUR FREEDOM
Gal. 5:13 For you were called to freedom, brethren;
• The Fact: Free In Christ
1. Free from the penalty of sin.
2. Free from the power of Satan.
3. Free from the wrath of God.
4. Free from an accusing conscience.
• The Fallacy: Freedom Can Be Abused
1. Irresponsibility on our part leads to anarchy.
2. True freedom leads to obedience to Christ.
LIMITATIONS ON OUR LIBERTY
True Christian freedom involves restraints-restraints that help, not hinder, our growth, maturity, and service. Three limitations are given in Galatians 5:13-15.
• We are not to indulge the flesh.
only {do} not {turn} your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh,
By the term flesh Paul is referring to our fall ...
