Obey Poverty (1 of 8)
Series: Obeying the Beatitudes
Steve Jones
Matthew 5

Series Summary: In Jesus' Great Commission he instructed that disciples should be taught to ''Obey Everything'' that he had commanded. The Sermon on the Mount contains much of Jesus' commandments and that sermon starts with the eight beatitudes. In this series we will learn to ''obey'' the commandments that are tucked away in the beatitudes.

The word ''beatitude'' is taken from the Latin which means ''happy.'' The first beatitude is: Mt.5:3 ''Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.''

The God's Word translation reads, ''Blessed are those who recognize they are spiritually helpless.''

- It is a sense that if there is to be any life or joy or usefulness, it will have to be all of God and all of grace.

JACOB - When Jacob returned to the promised land after spending twenty years in exile, he wrestled with God in prayer and said, Gen.32:10 ''I am not worthy of all the unfailing love and faithfulness you have shown to me, your servant.''

MOSES - When God came to him with a mission to lead his people out of Israel, he said,
