God had one Son and he was a preacher. It never has been easy to be a preacher. It is rare that one has the gifts to be both a popular preacher and pastor at the same time. It is more difficult today than it has ever been.

Preaching is hard work. Listening to sermons is harder still. The reason is because of high tech advertising.

There has been a loss of oratory in contemporary culture, word weariness as an effect of being overdosed with information and the fragmenting or dulling effect of visual media. Not unlike Ezekiel's day, ''My people come to you, as they usually do, and sit before you to listen to your words, but they do not put them into practice; to them you are nothing more than one who sings love songs with a beautiful voice and plays an instrument well, for they hear your words but they do not put them into practice.''

The low estimate of preaching in the world today is in sharp contrast to the high estimate of preaching in Scripture and among the converted.

Brad, I want us to first think about you and your responsibility in being a preaching pastor.

1. PREACH THE WORD

What is preaching? ''Preaching is making present and appropriate to the hearers the revelation of God.'' Fred Craddock

Preaching is bringing the Living Word (Christ) through the written Word (The Bible) by means of the spoken Word (preaching.)

-The NT uses words like prophesying-speaking with immediacy and directness, teaching, proclaiming, dialoging, debating, exhorting, persuading, correcting, evangelizing, conversing, admonishing, and encouraging. Preaching sermons is part but not all there is to preaching.

-I like what Haddon Robinson said about preaching and I paraphrase. Preaching is taking God's hand and taking your members hands and joining those hands through preaching.

-Paul said, ''And how will they hear without someone preaching to them?'' P. T. ...
