Hebrews 12:14-15: ''Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord; looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled ...''

There is a problem that can keep revival away from this church. There is a problem that can be the ruin of your home. There is a problem that can keep you from serving God and winning others to Christ.

That problem is the problem of BITTERNESS.

Most of us know what bitterness is. We have been around people who are bitter.

Often -- a bitter person is hostile, a person who is critical, a person who is overloaded with resentment and faultfinding, a person who is angry.

But sometimes the bitterness doesn't show itself that way. Sometimes bitterness shows itself as a crybaby type of person, sad, full of self-pity.

Sometimes it shows itself in a person who is cool, aloof, disinterested, not a participant -- but inside they are a seething volcano of bitterness.. Someone who works up a smile on the outside but raging on the inside.

It is a terrible problem -- especially in the life of a Christian. Hebrews was written to the Christian.

There are many sour Saints -- bitter brothers.

I. ROOT OF BITTERNESS

Verse 15 - ...''looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled . . .''

What is the root of bitterness and how does this root find lodging in hearts and lives?, 


A bitter person is generally someone who has been hurt. Bitter at God - at society - or specific individuals. Maybe at a husband or wife.

Colossians 3:19-21: Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well-pleasing unto the Lord. Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.''
