The Cultivation and Care of a Friendship

John 15:12-17
John 15:12-17 - ''This is my commandment, That ye love one another, as I have loved you. (13) Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (14) Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. (15) Hence forth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you.'' (16) Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. (17) These things I command you, that ye love one another.''
The greatest need that you have is for friendship. To have a friend and to be a friend.
A great man was being interviewed and they asked him - ''What has been the key to your success?'' He replied - ''When I was just a young man I had a friend - a kind gentleman - that took an interest in me - loved me and helped mold the values of my life.''
My own personal success can be attributed to the friendship I have had with the Lord Jesus and then the friends that I have made through the years.
In our text - Jesus calls us friend.
I. MARKS OF A FRIENDSHIP
A real friend will have some key characteristics. The Bible teaches us and Jesus has shown us that:
1. A real friend - a true friend is somebody who makes us a Better Person.
Is there anyone who would deny that Jesus makes us better people?
Proverbs 2 7:17 - ''Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.''
What that means is that a good friend will put a sharp edge on your life. A bad friend will dull your life and blunt your influence.
