The Marks of a Good Pastor
Rexy Yancey
I Thessalonians 2
Last Sunday night we talked about the marks of a great church. We said that a great church is an elect church, an exemplary church, an enthusiastic church, and an expectant church.
Tonight I want to talk about the marks of a great pastor. Someone has said that a good pastor has the dignity of a Presbyterian, eats like a Methodist, has the intestinal fortitude of a Baptist, and the salary of a Catholic.
-Pastors, evangelists, and teachers are all different. Would you call John the Baptist as your pastor? He wore scanty clothes, lived in the desert, ate locust and wild honey, and called his listeners snakes and vipers. I doubt if any search committee here would have called him as pastor. In fact, his boldness eventually led to his beheading.
Would you have called Paul as your pastor? He was not a good orator, was not that appealing to look on, and had been in jail numerous times. However, he was a good writer. I doubt seriously if a church in this day and time would call him as pastor.
-I think that churches do not always get the pastor they need because they have a caricature in mind that does not line up with the will of God.
-We had several matriarchs in the church at Quitman. My definition of a matriarch is a devout woman who has been a member of the church for many years and has earned the respect of the congregation. Mama Shirley could name every pastor that came through FBC Quitman and give you the strengths of everyone and how they advanced the church. It takes some spiritual acumen to be able to do that. She could have pointed out the weakness of every pastor she had. They all had them including myself.
But despite their differences, great pastors should have some things in common.
