I heard about a kids' SS class where they'd been learning the Ten Commandments. The teacher asked if someone could quote one of the commandments. Little Johnny got the commandment on coveting and adultery completely confused and said, ''Thou shalt not uncover thy neighbor's wife.''

He actually wasn't too far off base!!! But today's commandment is not about adultery or coveting. It's about the family. Specifically, it's about your relationship to your parents.

1. An ordinance to examine

The command itself is only 5 words in the NKJV. Yet it contains a fundamental building block for the family, the society and the church.

A. The source of it

This is not a law from the culture or the society.
This is a commandment from God Himself.
As you probably know, this is one of the Ten Commandments.

Exodus 20:12 - Honor your father and mother that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.

By the way, in a day where many are downplaying and minimizing the Old Testament, you see the writers of the New Testament continually affirming it. So, you can decide which side you want to be on!

But let's recall the context. Israel has been in bondage for over 400 years. They are about to, or so they think, enter the Promised Land. To establish a stable country, God handed down the law.

A few years ago, a popular preacher said that the Ten Commandments were not ''commandments'' but ''promises.'' That's not what Paul says. He calls it a COMMANDMENT with a PROMISE. It's not a promise that just sort of sounds like a commandment. It's a direct command from heaven. And here is the command from God: Honor your parents.

It is impossible to be right with God and be wrong with your parents.

For example, if I tell one of my kids to ''Go tell your sister that Daddy said ________'' and they don't listen, they aren't disobeying their sibling but their father.
