Worship is giving God the honor and praise which he deserves. William Temple (d. 1944) was Archbishop in the church of England and wrote what a classic definition of worship: ''To worship is to quicken the conscience by the holiness of God, to feed the mind with the truth of God, to purge the imagination by the beauty of God, to open the heart to the love of God, to devote the will to the purposes of God. All this is gathered up in that emotion which most cleanses us from selfishness because it is the most selfless of all emotions - adoration.''

Adoration of God influences the total person. We are focused on honoring him instead of thinking about what blessings he gives us. In the story of the Triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem the people honored and praised him. That is the very essence of worship - honoring Jesus Christ because he is our Savior.

Background :1-3 Bethphage - was a little village two miles east of Jerusalem on the Mount of Olives, which is only mentioned in connection with the triumphal entry (Luke 19:29). From it there is a winding road which leads down into the Kidron valley and then up to Jerusalem.

:2 Jesus with his divine knowledge knew that when they entered the village there would be a donkey and a colt there. The disciples were to untie them and bring them to Jesus.

:3 The Lord - the owners would recognize it was Jesus who wanted to use them so he would allow the disciples to take them.

PROPHECY OF HIS HUMILITY :4-5 Fulfill - the prophecy from Zechariah 9:9 was written over 500 years earlier when the people returned from Babylonian captivity. Writing to the Jews about 30 years after Jesus died Matthew points out that he came to fulfill the OT prophecies so that they would believe he was the promised Messiah.
