The Generous Life (2 of 3)
Series: Generous Life
Jordan Easley
Psalm 37:21
Welcome to week 2 of The Generous Life. Last week we kicked this series off with me admitting that I hate talking about money... but at the same time, I'm committed to talking about it because Jesus did. God makes it very clear that generosity should be a priority for us as believers.
[Psalm 37:21 NIV] says, ''The wicked borrow and do not repay; but the righteous give generously.''
- 15% of everything Jesus said in Scripture had to do with money and possessions
- Jesus talked more about money than he did Heaven and Hell combined
The topic of money is important to Jesus... therefore, I believe it should be important to us.
Last Sunday, we introduced the idea that ''Believers'' can really be broken down into 4 categories when it comes to the way we give.
1. NOPE-I'm not going to give.
2. Okay-I'll give... BUT...
3. Faithful to tithe 10% to the Church
4. Tithe + Giver
And at the end of the day, the Bible tells us that our giving isn't necessarily a financial issue... but rather, our giving is a heart issue. It's true. Your heart will determine your generosity!
It's important that we understand that because... When you look at giving as a heart issue, you discover that there are actually several different approaches to giving:
- GOT TO GIVE-''Well, I've GOT to give to God!'' motivated by GUILT
It's like God sent you a tax bill and every Sunday is April 15th! ...and if you're late you will accrue interest and penalties...
And a lot of Pastors like to use this GUILT approach to motivate people to give. ''If you DON'T He WON'T!'' Like, if you don't give, you won't have enough money to fix the leaky roof! Those are God's tears falling through the ceiling right now!
But the truth is, we shouldn't give out of guilt... and if you do give out of obligation, the gifts you give probably aren't very meaningful and therefore won't be very consistent. [Got to Give ...
