General Outline for a Funeral or Memorial Service

Comments on Length of Service
Most funeral or memorial services last between 30-60 minutes. There is nothing Biblical or definitive on how long a service has to be. A great deal depends on things like age of the deceased person, how long the eulogy or remembrances last, whether there is special music or a slideshow and things of that nature.
What I have witnessed is the younger the person the longer it goes. Sometimes up to 2 hours. I think mainly because it seems to be more difficult if someone under the age of 60 dies suddenly for people to grieve. Plus, younger people tend to have more people attending the service. Older people who are into their 80's or 90's may have more family but less friends attending.

This is where the pastor or whoever is leading the service can welcome people and give any instructions on what will happen following the service.
Opening Prayer
O God, You who are God; You whose compassions fail not, but who are the same yesterday, today, and forever, grant us now your presence, we ask You, that our souls may be strengthened, and that we may not faint under your afflicting providence, but that through your condescension we may find all grace to help in this our time of need, which we ask in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, to whom, with You and the Holy Spirit, we will ascribe all honor, majesty, and might. Amen.
