More Grace (4 of 12)
Series: Less is More

James 2:1-13
Dress Nice - Enter the room and begin w/ - Say, ''Is it the clothes that make the man or the man that makes the clothes? James would say neither. In fact he'd likely say, ''Just as you can't judge a book by its cover; neither can you judge a man by his clothes. (read James 2:1-13)
We're in James discussing how Less is More when it comes to faith to help us to determine if our faith is authentic or artificial. Throughout James, he offers a series of quizzes to help us to determine what is real and what is false when it comes to our belief in God. So far he has taught us that if when we encounter trials we turn to God rather than from God, then our faith is likely genuine. In times of temptation, he says if we turn to sin rather than from sin, then our faith could be false. Last Sunday, he explained that when we look into God's Word, if we hear and apply it, then our faith is likely authentic, but if we deny it, then His truth isn't in us. Today, James is going to quiz our faith by how we treat people who aren't like us. He will state that we can never judge a book by its cover or a soul by its appearance.
But we do. We make judgments on people based on the way they dress, the car they drive, the house they live in, the color of their skin, the attractiveness of their features and the culture they were raised.
To give us perspective on genuine faith, James offers an illustration of (2) men (Mr. Have and Mr. Have Not) who visit a church. The 1st man pulls up on his jag camel, dressed to the nines and adorned w/ jewelry. The 2nd man arrives looking like he shops at Dumpster Dan's. The usher greets the rich guy and escorts him to the front and offers him the be best seat in the house. But to the 2nd guy, he tells him to sit at his feet so that he can keep an eye on him.''
I call this the story that hurts b/c while it may be a little exaggerated it comes way too close to what happen ...
