The tongue is a fascinating muscle. It offers the pleasure of taste when we eat and yet it shapes our thoughts into sounds to share words expressing our ideas and emotions.
The tongue isn't all good. Chances are, everyone here has either injured someone w/ words or has been injured by the heinous things emitted from another person's mouth. Sadly, w/ our tongues we can sabotage relationships and inflict great pain. Did you know the Bible describes this tiny muscle as wicked, complaining, perverse, corrupt, vile, cursing, slanderous, foolish, filthy, blasphemous, sensual and gossiping? It's no wonder God put the tongue in a cage behind the teeth b/c it discloses the inner you and it's a tattletale revealing the contents of your heart.
Words are potent. So potent God had Solomon speak about the use and misuse of the tongue over 150 times in Proverbs.
In James, the tongue is cited in every chapter w/ the 3rd chapter providing the most insight. James will explain that the tongue is the best device to measure the depth and sincerity of our walk to God. He says the genuineness of a person's faith will invariably be demonstrated by his speech.
