James 4:1-11
In a Peanuts cartoon Lucy demanded that Linus change TV channels, threatening him with her fist if he didn't. ''What makes you think you can walk right in here and take over?'' asks Linus. ''These five fingers,'' says Lucy. ''Individually they're nothing but when I curl them together like this into a single unit, they form a weapon that is terrible to behold.'' ''Which channel do you want?'' asks Linus. Turning away, he looks at his fingers and says, ''Why can't you guys get organized like that?''
There's something inside of us that wants to fight when conflict rises to the surface.
This morning, James is going to tell us that conflict is real in our lives. It's inevitable... and the truth is, James has a deep well of wisdom when it comes to this conversation because he lived his life watching Jesus and he experienced the conflict in Jesus' life first hand.
James would have seen the people who opposed him and mistreated him. He saw the people in the street slandering him and spitting on him. James was there when they arrested him and ultimately crucified him... so he witnessed the conflict that was thrust upon Jesus and he saw how he responded with grace and mercy and overall godliness.
James experienced a lot of conflict as well. As the Pastor of this large church in Jerusalem, he would have walked through all kinds of difficult circumstances with people.
But what many may not realize is that James was eventually murdered in the midst of a conflict. Through the writings of Josephus, we know that there were some people in the church that rose up against James and they wanted him to stop preaching and teaching about Jesus.
They wanted him to step down from leading the church, and ultimately a riot broke out and several men apprehended James. They took him to the top of the Temple and they threw him off the building. Josephu ...
