God is Great (2 of 4)
Series: When You Pray
Josh Malone
Matthew 6:9-10

What was the first prayer you learned? ''Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep, If I shall die before I wake, I pray the Lord my soul to take. Amen.'' - That's not creepy at aaalll. We wonder why kids have nightmares. ''Ok, its prayer time.... what should we pray for? Hmmm I know let's pray something related to the topic of death in sleep.''

Here is a popular one- God is great and God is good, And we thank him for our food; By his hand we must be fed, Give us Lord, our daily bread. Amen.- Thats a simple prayer right? It's not wordy, it's not fancy... its simple. But there is some theology in that prayer my friend. That first phrase... God is great and God is good... that is a theological juggernaut.

If God is great, meaning He is powerful, all powerful. He is mighty, He is in control, He is the holy King of all Kings, then He is worthy of our worship and adoration... but if He is not good, but only great... how do we ever approach Him? How do we know we can even pray to Him. The God of the Bible is both great and good. He is both mighty and all powerful and good and gracious... He is both able... and willing.

So when we come to God in prayer we are coming to the God who is able and willing, who is great and good... who is worthy of worship, and willing to help. And because God is great we long for His glory, His rule, His will to be preeminent in our lives and throughout His world. So this week and next week we are going to look at the Lord's prayer through the lens... God is great... God is good.

Matt. 6:9-13- [9] Pray then like this: ''Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. [10] Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. [11] Give us this day our daily bread, [12] and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. [13] And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
