It Is Finished (6 of 7)

John 19:28-30
I want to begin with a question that'll date some of you: Who was watching TV in 1969 when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon? I would have but I was still in my mother's womb! Just kidding.
Our whole family (and half the neighborhood) watched together in our living room. After JFK's challenge to land on the moon, then living thru his assassination, the elation of landing on the moon is hard to describe.
Euphoric is probably the best word to describe how we felt after winning the space race against the Soviet Union. I was just a kid, but I'll never forget Neil Armstrong's voice when he said, ''Tranquility base here; the Eagle has landed!'' That was not only cool to hear, it was a statement of victory!
Throughout history hundreds of people have made statements of victory. Cassius Clay said, ''I am the greatest of all time!'' Winston Churchill said, ''Without victory there is no survival.'' Douglas McArthur said, ''I shall return!'' And before Jesus died on the cross he said, ''It is finished!''
We're in a series called, ''Cries From the Cross.'' When Jesus was crucified on the cross he spoke seven times. He spoke to the crowed, saying, ''Father, forgive them.'' He spoke to the thief saying, ''Today, you will be with me in paradise.'' He spoke to John saying, ''Here is your mother.'' He asked God, ''Why have you forsaken me?'' He announced to anyone within earshot, ''I am thirsty.''
That brings us to the sixth statement found in John 19, (the fifth, sixth and seventh statements were all made at the same time):
28 So that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, ''I am thirsty.''
29 A jar of wine vinegar was there. They soaked a sponge in it, and lifted it to Jesus' lips.
30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, ''It is finished.''
Matthew, Mark and Luke also tell this part of the story, but they emphasize a detail that John does not: J ...
