We've been in a series entitled - Counterfeit w/ the intent of learning about and comparing the tenets of the Christian faith w/ those of other major religions/cults. My heart in this study isn't to speak condescendingly or to condemn another faith, but to clarify our differences and to provide us w/ a basic understanding of the claims of each faith.
Over the 1st few weeks we've looked at a few of the major religions of the world including Judaism, Catholicism, Islam, and Buddhism - today and next week, we're going to make a distinctive turn to focus on 2 influential cults.
Definition: a cult refers to a non-orthodox religious group who has a devotion to a person, object, or set of new ideas often marked by a sense of exclusivity and secrecy. A couple of typical traits found in a cult -
- A Newer Prophet - by some unique revelation, the founder has discovered a better way than that of orthodoxy - often allowing the leader to claim to be sent by God to lead this new one true religion.
- A Better Way - they claim they've been given a special revelation from God superior to the Bible and orthodoxy that explains what the Bible is really trying to say. This writing always supersedes the Bible in authority.
Today we're going to discuss Mormonism - also known as the Church of JC of Latter Day Saints. Today is a challenging topic b/c most of us know someone who's a Mormon and we know them to be kind, conservative, God-fearing people - who consider themselves to be Christians - yet their true core beliefs are far from Biblical Christianity.
