Last week we began an series entitled, The Works of His Hands. In particular we turned our attention to the amazing ability of God to create/sustain the creation recognizing that Jesus is the authority, agent, and adhesion of creation - that is, He fashioned/formed it and now holds it all together.
Now if that was all Jesus could do w/ His hands it'd be amazingly miraculous - as only God can create something from nothing. Yet He has done so much more. The same hands that created/sustain our universe - are the same hands that have rescued /redeemed us from the fall and from the condemnation of sin.
Look at vs. 19 - For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds b/c of your evil behavior. But now he has reconciled you by Christ's physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, w/out blemish and free from accusation - if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel.
These same hands that fashioned the creation into existence and knit you together in your mother's womb had to be pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our iniquities.
A few months ago I had the privilege of visiting Israel where I learned something about crucifixion I never knew but have since verified. When we were at the Garden Tomb, Aria explained to us Roman crucifixion. As you may be aware, the Romans didn't invent crucifixion - but they did perfect it. And their goal was to exact as much punishment and torment as they could on their victim.
