I don't think I'll ever forget what happened one night as we were coming home from my parents' home in Nashville, GA. My children were young and a bit unruly that night. I promised them an old-fashioned spanking if they did not calm down. True to form, they did not calm down.

I pulled over in the parking lot of an old country church out in the middle of nowhere. I wanted to use the light from the front of that old church to make sure it was a safe place to stop. That's when I realized that I did not have on a belt and there was no paddle in the car. So, I did something my parents and grandparents used to do. I went over to a little bush, and using my pocket knife, I cut a switch.

After I took them out of the van and gave them a good dose of discipline, I got into the car to find my wife laughing. The discipline wasn't funny to me at all so I told her I didn't think there was anything to laugh about. She said, ''I'm not laughing at the spanking. I'm laughing about what they said while you were cutting that switch.''

One of my kids looked out the window at me cutting the switch and asked, ''What is he doing?'' The other child responded with the poor grammar of a preschooler, ''I don't know. But it don't look good!''

Well, after a brief but powerful introduction, Paul picks up what we might call ''the switch of the Spirit'' and he begins to wear them out for their divisive spirit towards one another.

Unity is an evasive commodity in our land. I have personally NEVER seen such division, animosity and hatred as I've seen in the last few weeks. But as tragic as it is in the country...as heart-breaking as it is in the culture...it's a SIN and a SHAME when it's like that at church.
