1 Corinthians 1:18-25
We live in a divided nation...racially...financially...politically.
But there is one way that all of humanity will be divided by God:
And it will not be rich or poor...Black or white...Republican or Democrat.
No, there is a line that is drawn down the middle of humanity.
That line doesn't run through Wall Street or Pennsylvania Ave.
The line that divides humanity is a blood-stained path that leads to a skull-shaped hill called ''Calvary.'' And in this closing section of Chapter 1, Paul lays out a simple and clear case. It's as plain as black ink on white paper...all of humanity will ultimately be divided based on one thing, the cross of Jesus Christ.
Every major religion and ideology has a symbol.
Judaism has the Star of David and Islam has the crescent.
Soviets have the hammer and sickle and Nazis have a swastika.
But two thousand years after Jesus left this earth physically, the symbol of our faith is not a cradle, nor a crown, but a cross.
And here, Paul describes the cross and its message as the basis upon which God will eventually divide all of humanity. One day in the final judgment, all humanity will be divided based on how they answer a question first posed by Pontius Pilate, ''What shall I do with this Jesus who is called the Christ.''
By the way, you don't have to wait until eternity so see this division. Just share the gospel and people will split down the middle. I mean, if you want to divide a cultured crowd, mention their individual sin and the exclusive remedy of a dying blood-soaked carpenter from Nazareth. But that's nothing new. It's been that way since Calvary.
