1 Corinthians 4:6-21
A little old lady lived next door to the church. Each Sunday as the pastor preached, she always assumed the message was for someone else. She would come out the back door and whisper, ''You sure told 'em today, preacher!'' The pastor was always bothered that the lady never felt the Word of God was for her personally.
One day due to an ice storm, the pastor and the lady were the only two that could make it to church. He preached up a storm and wondered how she would reply. She greeted after the service and said, ''You sure told 'em today, preacher. I wish they could've been here to hear it.''
Beginning in 4:6, Paul lowers the boom and raises a finger. In the same way Nathan raised his finger to the adulteress king and said, ''Thou art the man,'' Paul points to the Corinthians as to say, ''I'm talking about you!''
29x in 16 verses, Paul uses ''you'' or ''your.'' In one of the most scathing and sarcastic sections of Scripture, he wants them to know the real problem in the Corinthian church is...the CORINTHIANS!
They did not receive it any better than we do when someone ''steps on our toes.'' By the way, if I ever step on your toes, I missed my mark. I was aiming for your heart!
Years ago, I went to a SS social on Saturday night and a woman was there who was dressed very immodestly. I was preaching the next morning on...Modesty. To my great shock, she sat on the front pew and verbally and visibly affirmed the entire sermon. She agreed with me! While I do not try to preach sermons at individuals, I confess I wanted to scream ''You! You! I'm talking about you!''
Well, Paul did what I did not do. He lays it bare and declares, ''I'm talking about you.''
1. A word about pride (6-8)
Pride is the elevation of my will over the will of God.
Pride is putting myself in the center of everything.
Pride is looking into the mirror and sin ...
