1 Corinthians 12:1-11
We've made our way up to the 30th lesson and the 12th chapter. Now, the context of this chapter is vitally important. In chapters 1-6 he gave doctrine and Divine instruction based on concerns he'd heard about them. Beginning in chapter 7, Paul began answering questions that had been sent to him by the Corinthians. He dealt with MARRIAGE and DIVORCE, CHRISTIAN LIBERTY, and the LORD's SUPPER.
The whole book highlights one challenge after another but the preceding chapters, to a large degree, highlight the issue of self-centeredness. They had been selfish in their marriages, selfish in the use of liberty, and even selfish around the table of God.
Now chapters 12-14 begin a new subsection of the book and these chapters deal with spiritual gifts.
The focus of today's message is simple: If you are saved, you have been equipped to serve. If you're not serving, you're walking in the flesh. Some who ARE serving are serving in the flesh. In both cases, God wants you, indeed, He commands you to serve in the Spirit
To do so, there are 3 things we must consider.
1. A trap that must be avoided (1-3)
Chapters 12-14 will deal with spiritual gifts.
What does it mean to speak in tongues?
To interpret tongues?
To prophecy?
To have a ''word of knowledge?''
Is the Biblical gift of tongues continuing today?
Are faith healers still at work on the Lord's behalf?
But the first thing Paul does on the matter of spiritual gifts is to set the record straight on a more fundamental issue. Namely, not everything that masquerades as a spiritual gift is spiritual.
A. The potential ignorance (1)
A middle aged lady had never been married. Her pastor asked her why she was still single and she said, ''I agree with Paul. I would not have you ignorant brethren.''
It is possible that you are merely ignorant about spiritual gifts. You can be saved ...
