The Bible Is Enough (33 of 53)
Series: Straight up Truth for a Messed-Up Church
Mike Stone
1 Corinthians 13:8-13
When the series began, I told you I don't know of a church in the Bible that's more like the American church than the church at Corinth. They were prideful, divisive, immoral, self-centered, and doctrinally-confused. So, I've called them a ''messed up church!''
One thing that characterized THEIR church and the AMERICAN church was their preoccupation with miracles. They were enamored with signs and wonders.
Simple Bible proclamation was not enough. It had to be propped up with pulpit prowess and supplemented with spectacular signs. The church at Corinth was particularly mesmerized with the gift of tongues. And we will be speaking about this issue in our next couple of lessons because that's the subject of chapters 13-14.
But the primary lesson in this sermon is that an overemphasis on and a demand for miracles, healings, and other sign gifts, is ultimately an attack on the sufficiency of Scripture.
1. Which sign gifts will cease (8)
Several years ago, when I preached on certain gifts ceasing, I was asked, ''Why do you think you get to decide that certain gifts cease?'' ANSWER: I don't get to decide. But several are listed in this text.
A. How they are defined (8a)
The closing verses of the chapter reveal why love is more EXCELLENT. Namely, because it's more PERMANENT. So much of what we focus on in the church won't last. It's necessary in THIS life but it won't last into eternity. BUT LOVE WILL LAST FOREVER.
Prophecies will fail.
Tongues will cease.
And Divine Knowledge will vanish away.
Prophecy - The foretelling of the future by Divine revelation.
This is what Elijah did when he prophesied drought
This is what Micah did when he prophesied about the Messiah's birth in Bethlehem
This is what Jesus did when He prophesied end times
This is what Jude and Peter did when they wrote about the second coming of Jesus
